Both were purchased used and are equally great for their designed purpose. The gsa is a great tourer on or off pavement, holds 9 gal. fuel which was a big plus as the large tank works like a fairing and 500 mile range. The flying brick motor in the gt puts an ear to ear, happy as a pig in s*^t eating grin on my face every time. I’m looking at the 1250RT now for the wind protection for long distance as well as all the added features like cruise that my gsa lacks. I agree you get what you pay for and anyone else offering bikes with these features draws the same price. This will be the first new bike purchase for me. I drive a Honda, don’t make a lot but love riding and will for as long as can. We only go around once and you can’t take it with you.

Hi, ive a 1200gs adventure and my front brakes are not linked to the rear brake pedal, as Bmw dropped that type of link as there was no control on slow turn or slow speeds. I had those servo assisted linked brakes on my R1150RT which were absolutely fantastic but not good on a slow turn. The UK police didnt like them because of that feature and stopped using the RT1150’s for a while. My K1300GTSE had linked brakes when you put on the front lever the back brake went on 10% I think, but you could use the back brake for slow speed and sitting still. Ive tried the new 1250RT and the brakes are fantastic. Ive seen the change in the tourers since i started with my R100RT back in ‘86 when i was a 26yr old. Cant wait to get my new 1250RTLE in March. The price is what people are willing to pay, or they wouldn’t sell any. If you don’t need or want all the comfort, capacities, and high tech you can always tour on a 10K standard, or a multitude of other options. Best solution for all the frugal riders out there is USED. My 2014 1200RT has 121K miles and still running strong-that is part of the allure of the brand. How many other makes can you expect that from? Old adage still holds true-you get what you pay for…

Right? It’s as much as a new Miata.

I have a good job and live within my means (no debt other than mortgage) and I still feel left behind by current housing and vehicle prices.

I have a 2007 R1200RT. Around 60K miles. It’s 44 lbs lighter than this newest model, btw. Last year I had a new Ohlins front and rear suspension installed and new Michelin Road 5GTs put on and she rides like a dream. I have a matching top box and that with the hard bags (and bag liners from Bob’s BMW) gives my wife and me plenty of space to pack for 3 week trips, as we’ve done multiple times.

It’ll be a while before I buy a new one.

Why is it that $27K is just the norm now? Are we that de-sensitized to this? Must be, they’re selling and no one seems to notice or care. Vote with your wallets people!!! Just say no. Buy used.

Yes. The GS is indeed a remarkable bike. My only issue with it, as well as a V-Strom that I used to own, is seat height ! I have found the adventure bikes simply too high for my comfort zone, especially regarding slow speed handling. Also, since BMW is going to fully linked brakes, both front and rear, my safety training advocating the use of some rear brake (only !) for low speed maneuvering is not longer possible.

I am 71 as well.
I had a 2013 liquid cooled RT. In 2017 I traded it on a 2018 1200GS. I was having service at the dealer, and telling my salesman that I loved the RT except for the weight and the lack of airflow.
He suggested I take the GS for a ride. After all, they are the same engine. Even though I never leave the pavement (and therefore had never considered a “big dual sport”, I was impressed with how it felt under me. Much better airflow, but the GS also felt easier and more willing in the corners, which was never a complaint of mine on the RT.
If you are looking to upgrade at some point, at least try one. Unless you live in a very cold climate, the GS has what I think is a better balance between protection from the wind while being cooler. My RT just did not allow enough air for my taste.
The GS is much lighter as well.

I own a ’15 version (i.e. the R1200RT) and it has been a flawless performer other than leaky fork seals, which I had recently replaced. However, I suspect BMW will be putting the new 1300 cc engine in this bike, so I will probably wait for that as a potential replacement for my current bike. My only issue with the Beemer is its weight. I am only 5’8 and 140 lbs, and at 71 years old, it is indeed a handful. It is hard to fault the bike for long rides, excellent weather protection, and reliability.
